The Great Famine and Emigration from County Tipperary
During the Great Famine people emigrated from Workhouses in this area to Australia. Relief Committees were active in Tipperary during the Great Famine period and saved many from starvation. But many perished too from hunger and disease in the infamous workhouses or on the roadside. Mass emigration from Tipperary began during the Great Famine and people scattered all over the world. In the main, however, people from South Tipperary settled in Australia.
